An Accidental Discovery
Alexander Whitmore had not meant to watch the nursery footage that night. It was already past midnight in New York, and he sat alone in a quiet hotel suite, still wearing the same suit he had used all day as a shield against the world. A routine camera archive from his Kensington home had been sent to him, and he nearly deleted it without opening it.

Iris gripped the walker. Then she moved one foot. Then another.

Alexander froze as his daughter took those steps and then collapsed laughing into Grace’s arms. Five steps. Small steps, perhaps, but for him they felt enormous. He had missed all of it.

The following evening, Alexander returned to London. He entered his own house expecting to speak quietly with Grace, but the scene in the room was already charged with tension. His mother stood near the marble fireplace holding up a diamond bracelet, claiming it had been found in Grace’s coat pocket.
